Keyser West Virginia

Keyser West Virginia by Craig Durgy
If you’re out some Sunday and you check your map
Headin’ south through Maryland and the Cumberland Gap
On Route 220 where the valley comes to view
You can smell that paper mill, miles away
As the road descends into the Mountain State
Past a parkin’ lot full of cars at the Chat n’ Chew
When you cross that bridge where the North Branch flows
And you see that sign that everyone knows
There ain’t no doubt it’s Keyser, and it’s true
That it’s the, friendliest town in the, friendliest town in the,
Friendliest town…in, Keyser West Virginia,
In the whole U.S.A.
You can ride on down along New Creek Drive
Or take a golf cart ride at the Polish Pines
And on Green Mountain someone’s huntin’ for deer
On Friday nights in the early fall
The Golden Tornado gonna move that ball
On Saturday they say how 'bout them 'eers!
Green tomatoes in a frying pan
String beans, bacon and chicken, man!
Or try some Stray Cat wings with a couple of beers.
That it’s the, friendliest town in the, friendliest town in the,
Friendliest town…in, Keyser West Virginia,
In the whole U.S.A.
Here in West Virginia, Lord you know I love this mountain state
Allegheny air gets in ya,
And man those pines at Dolly Sods look great
Some folks work at the ABL
West Vaco also pays pretty well
And Pot State College has lots to offer too
You can be a local or from out of town
Maybe up from Dallas or from Boston down
You'll get a wave from a lotta folks that ya never knew
And if you get the urge and the highway calls
Take a day trip down to Blackwater Falls
It’s West-By-God-Virginia, through and through!
That it’s the, friendliest town in the, friendliest town in the,
Friendliest town…in, Keyser West Virginia,
In the whole U.S.A.

Was It A Matter Of Time

Was It A Matter Of Time by Craig Durgy
You say you don’t know why you changed your mind
And that you’d rather leave the past behind
You’re trying to tell me that it just don’t matter
But I won’t listen to your idle chatter
I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Was it a matter of time?
I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Was it a matter of time?
Was it your family or another guy?
Or cause of all the things I couldn’t buy?
Why won’t you give me one more chance to show
The way I love you girl, I gotta know
I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Was it a matter of time?
I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Was it a matter of time?
Where is the felling girl, where am I?
Is this a dream where you’re too tired to try?
Why did we bother to go all this way?
Just to end up where there is nothing to say
I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Was it a matter of time?
I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Was it a matter of time?
Can’t we save the love we’ve come to share?
Don’t you have a little time to spare?
Right from the start it was our destiny,
Love ain’t got nothin’ much to do with me!
I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Was it a matter of time?
I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Was it a matter of time?
Was it a matter of time?

Red-Eyed Fly

Red-Eyed Fly by Craig Durgy
There's a cricket by the back door screen
Speaks his mind but he won't be seen
I could put this bottle down,
But ain’t no use in searchin' round
Summer night, kitchen light,
Feet on the table with my boots untied
Fan on high, red-eyed fly,
Dirty dishes settin' out to dry
And it just don't matter that she said good--bye
The groaning of an 18-wheel,
That old highway knows the way I feel
Kids out running through my yard,
Front porch shadows and laughing hard
Summer night, kitchen light,
Feet on the table with my boots untied
Fan on high, red-eyed fly,
Dirty dishes settin' out to dry
And it just don't matter that she said goodbye
The night is heavy with that river air,
Maybe I should take a walk down there
Or drive on down to Bill's Cafe
But then what would the cricket say
Summer night, kitchen light,
Feet on the table with my boots untied
Fan on high, red-eyed fly,
Dirty dishes settin' out to dry
And it just don't matter that she said goodbye
Like a red-eyed fly
There's a cricket by the back door screen
I can hear her but she can't be seen

Junior

Junior by Craig Durgy
Junior wasn't junior, he was Christopher Pardee,
But he grew up so much like his dad, the nickname came to be
He earned it watching dad live large, come stumblin' through the door
Dad always seemed so happy, guess that's what a father's for
So Junior learned to like JD, but good times went to hard
And by his 19th birthday he just lived from bar to bar
He liked a girl named Wilma, she liked Jäger, chased by Coors
But whatever you were drinking, she'd sure steal a, swig of yours
Yippee -Ti –Yi-Yo-Ki- Yay
Together they'd go hoppin', that honky-tonk parade
He'd spend most every penny, that lumber yard work paid
Junior fancied cowboy boots, although he didn't ride
And Willie Nelson struck a chord, down somewhere deep inside
His buddies changed from jocks to joints, not the kind you smoke
The kind that rot your liver, with their party lights aglow
Junior found himself alone one night with, Jack on ice
And Alfred from behind the bar could, offer no advice
Yippee -Ti –Yi-Yo-Ki- Yay
Whiskey River running dry, he smiled and drained his glass
The ice cube clinked and Junior blinked, as he got up off his ass
And trying to hold his course he, headed to his truck
A two-tone Ford 150, with the driver's window stuck
And like he'd put some spurs on, he pushed that pedal down
Laid rubber on the interstate, well Junior loved that sound
He cranked that FM Country up, and man he had a ride
Opened both the windows, except the driver’s side
Yippee -Ti –Yi-Yo-Ki- Yay
The pedal steel was playing, so loud he couldn't hear
The sirens getting closer, till the lights flashed in his mirror
And then he dug his spurs in, let's see what she can do
95 seemed easy, but only for a mile or two
Well I ain't saying that drinkin's bad, that was the best Wild West Junior ever had
But when he crossed that yellow line, the story sure gets sad
Yippee -Ti –Yi-Yo-Ki- Yay, Yippee -Ti –Yi-Yo-Ki- Yay
That’s the story of young Junior and his dad.

It Ain't You

It Ain’t You by Craig Durgy
Wasn’t it you who held me tight
Wasn’t it you who filled the night
Who filled my days with tenderness
Who caused this man to love with all his might
Lord it’s hard to give up on you Janine
Only you can know what all my love can mean
I’ll never kiss a sweeter face
And you’re by far the greatest place I’ve been
Though I can hold on to another
It just ain’t half of what you do
I can kiss and hold on to them till I die
But it ain’t you who believes in me tonight
It ain’t you whose every movement feels so right
Her lips just can’t be yours
The voices won’t be ours
And after all that I’ve been through
I can still say I’m in love though
It ain’t you
Girl I fought giving everything I’ve got
I fell in love and gave it my best shot
And here tonight there’s someone new
A pretty face but holding you it’s not
Though I can hold on to another
It just ain’t half of what you do
I can kiss and hold on to them till I die
But it ain’t you who believes in me tonight
It ain’t you whose every movement feels so right
Her lips just can’t be yours
The voices won’t be ours
And after all that I’ve been through
I can still say I’m in love though
It ain’t you
It ain’t you
It ain’t you
It ain’t you

Barstool

Barstool by Craig Durgy
I’ve been all across this land
I’m what ya call a travelin’ man
Each day I work from town to town
On the road is where I’m bound
Every day it’s something new
Earning my pay the way I do
And when my 9 to 5 is through
I need my dinner and some brew
(chorus) This tomb of a hotel room just ain’t no home to me
Set my sights on those party lights
The first bar that I see
They’re in all shapes and sizes, but each one hypnotizes
Cold beer, music and TV
If a barstool’s open then it’s good enough for me
Shaking off another day
The dust and dirt along the way
I did my work, it’s time to play
I’ve got a thirst I must obey
Plop down that coaster and a glass
Cause I’ve just plum run out of gas
Pick me up, lighten my load
By break of day I hit the road
(chorus)
I won’t know anyone around
But I know that jukebox sound
I recognize that Miller sign
And everyone I love is on my mind
Cause when you pull up to that bar
And that bartender fills your jar
You might be wishing on a star
It don’t matter where you are
(chorus)

Apparitions

Apparitions by Craig Durgy
As the summer breeze, reminds me she's
Been gone for one full year
The trees, they tease,
Pretending she's still here
And when losing her gets hardest
There's only half a cure
The tavern where I'll drink till I see her
Another bender, the bartender thinks I'm done
But he don't see these memories, she's in every one
So pour another pail of that stale ale
It works so well you see
Cause it brings visions, apparitions
And cures all that's ailing me
When a man gets old, the truth be told
That's when love hits home
Her face and, embrace
Were all the love I'd known
So when that empty chair is sitting there
My heart so wants to see
The woman that departed loving me
Another bender, the bartender thinks I'm done
But he don't see these memories, she's in every one
So pour another pail of that stale ale
It works so well you see
Cause it brings visions, apparitions
And cures all that's ailing me
Though they’re just visions, apparitions
It cures all that's ailing me, all that's ailing me

Better Than Blue

Better Than Blue by Craig Durgy
Oh little girl how you had me going,
Three lonely years, girl, that I stopped growing for you
But now I’m better than blue
Oh how I cried like a tap that’s broken
A keg going dry left me hapless hoping for you
But now I’m better than blue
Better than blue, it’s a new way of walkin’ with you
Better than blue, it’s a through way a whole ‘nother view
Better than blue, lettin’ go of the love that I knew
You seem to think that I must be lying,
You never thought that you’d see me trying to do
Something better that blue
Girl how I know how you were my only
But three lonely years that you’d hardly phone me was rude
And now I’m better than blue
Better than blue, it’s a new way of walkin’ with you
Better than blue, it’s a through way a whole ‘nother view
Better than blue, lettin’ go of the love that I knew
You hang your head thinking I’ve betrayed you,
Better off dead, girl is that the way that’s true
Just making you blue
I know a new love is not the same one
Maybe the bite of the beast is a tame one to you
But it’s much better than blue
Better than blue, it’s a new way of walkin’ with you
Better than blue, it’s a through way a whole ‘nother view
Better than blue, lettin’ go of the love that I knew
Better than blue yes I’m
Better than blue, oh I’m
Better than blue, better than blue
Better than blue yes I’m
Better than blue, oh I’m
Better than blue, better than blue

The Lonely's Full Of You

The Lonely’s Full Of You by Craig Durgy
We were high school sweethearts, that became a full time thing
Kissing in the hallway till, we heard that school bell ring
You told me how you loved me, and I loved no one but you
I loved your playful laughter, till you played me for a fool
My life had been so full of joy, my cup filled to the brim
Until you met that other guy, and filled my place with him
Now my mind is full of memories, my belly's full of brew
The room is full of loneliness, and the lonely's full of you
I never saw it coming, ‘cause I full out loved you so
You'd call and I'd come running, to anywhere you'd go
And then your passion faded, but I refused to see
Till you as much as stated, that you'd had your fill of me
My life had been so full of joy, my cup filled to the brim
Until you met that other guy, and filled my place with him
Now my mind is full of memories, my belly's full of brew
The room is full of loneliness, and the lonely's full of you
How can I fill this emptiness, this space made just for you
There are no ready remedies, nothing I can do
But spend my time in this here bar, until my time is killed
And let the beer just fill my heart, that love left unfulfilled.
My life had been so full of joy, my cup filled to the brim
Until you met that other guy, and filled my place with him
Now my mind is full of memories, my belly's full of brew
The room is full of loneliness, and the lonely's full of you
The room is full of loneliness, and the lonely's full of you

Avery by Craig Durgy
Twenty years ago in June, you're daddy went away
And with a baby coming soon, I begged for him to stay
He said he needed time alone, away from folks and telephones
He promised to return a better man
But as he grabbed his rifle, his backpack and a knife, well
I could see he had his freedom in his hand
Avery oh Avery, stubborn as a man can be
Avery, those Rocky Mountains set your daddy free.
Oh Avery, following the footsteps of your dad
Will leave me sad, in misery
The days grew long that he had gone and then the baby came
All the other folks in town just said it was a shame
And as the baby grew the father that it never knew
Would never even send a letter in the mail
Perhaps the Rockies swallowed him and all the fears that followed him
Perhaps he made his life out on the trail
Avery oh Avery, stubborn as a man can be
Avery, those Rocky Mountains set your daddy free.
Oh Avery, following the footsteps of your dad
Will leave me sad, in misery
Avery, a mother sees, it in her baby’s eyes
That’s the look your father took, when we said our goodbyes
So as you head out of that door, unsure of what you’re looking for
I know that mountain air is calling you
And even if you never find, the ghost of being left behind
I know you’re doing what you have to do
Avery oh Avery, stubborn as a man can be
Avery, those Rocky Mountains set your daddy free.
Oh Avery, following the footsteps of your dad
Will leave me sad, in misery
Following the footsteps of your dad
Leaves momma sad, in misery…Oh Avery
